Moose on the Loose!
We had a visitor this last week! We came home from running errands to discover this big ol' moose in our front yard eating branches from one of our trees. We have lots of deer in the neighborhood, but not usually moose! This one stayed there for quite awhile, and then proceeded to walk through our front yard -- at one point being about 10 feet from the living room window! It was amazing!

CD Review - Josh Turner: Everything is Fine
I decided to buy some CDs and DVDs with some of my Christmas money, and one of the CDs I bought recently was Josh Turner's Everything is Fine. If you have never listened to Josh Turner, you should. He burst on the country music scene several years ago when he sang his hit, Long Black Train at the Grand Ole Opry (it's a great song!), and he hasn't slowed down since. His most recent CD, Everything is Fine, is no exception to his amazingness. Not only is his voice simply amazing, but his songs are, too. I have had the CD in my CD player pretty much non-stop since I bought it (with the exception of a couple days when a friend borrowed it, and a couple days where I listened to a different CD), and have no intentions of stopping listening to it anytime soon.
There are a few songs on the CD that I especially like. . .for example, the celtic-sounding song, The Longer The Waiting (The Sweeter the Kiss) -- which I love because it is a celtic song with a bit of a country feel, Soulmate -- which is the cutest, sweetest song. . .EVER!, and, my personal favorite, The Way He Was Raised -- and if you listen to the song you'll think it's awesome too. Trust me.
Anyway, I thought I would share with you the title song from the CD, the upbeat song Everything is Fine. Whether you are in a good mood or a bad mood, listen to it. . .I bet you'll be smiling, and maybe tapping your feet, in no time (it's a good one to crank up and sing while driving). :-)

Did You Know. . .
25 Random Things
This is going around on Facebook, and I did it there, and then got to thinking it would be fun to post it here for the rest of you. :-) So. . .here are 25 random things about me. And if you have a blog and are reading this post, consider yourself tagged to do it yourself. :-) (Trust me, it's fun!)
1. I have quite the collection of colored Sharpies -- I use them a lot at work, but also for school and at home.
2. When I was really young my mom used to tell me "Magnet Stories" about a dog named Magnet and his friend, a cat named Toby. When I was 8, or so, I hand-wrote (and illustrated!) three short books about Magnet, Toby and their friends.
3. I don't care if they look silly -- I love my Crocs and wear them at work all the time. They are SOOOO comfy! :-)
4. I took piano lessons for about 7 years, but never got as good as I now wish I could be. I didn't like practicing. :-)
5. I started playing clarinet in 6th grade, and not only took lessons but I also played in a small homeschool band, and later our homeschool group's jazz band, with the coolest teacher -- she directs the circus band for Circus Flora in St. Louis -- when we went to St. Louis to visit my grandmother after I finished 9th grade, we got to see her conduct the circus band, and we even got to go backstage and meet the animals afterwards!
6. I also played 1st Clarinet in the Coeur d'Alene Youth Orchestra for my junior and senior years in high school. That was an experience, let me tell you (both good and bad)! :-) (the coolest part was when we played Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait" -- which is really long (I think about 14 minutes?) with narration about Lincoln's life -- and Patty Duke came to be the narrator at our concert!!)
7. My family raised 3 guide dog puppies. Each one was special in her own way. :-) None of them made it as guide dogs, unfortunately, but raising them was so fun, and I would love to do it again!
8. I was born and raised in southern California, and wish we had In-N-Out Burger and Trader Joe's here in Idaho, because I miss them! I also miss Thrifty ice cream from Rite Aid.
9. Moving to Idaho was the hardest thing I've ever had to do -- but it has been good.
10. I started Awana when I was 3 years old, as a Cubbie. I earned my Citation Award in 12th grade (the highest Awana award) and was a leader and Bible Quiz coach for a few years after that. I hope to get involved with Awana again, once I'm done with school.
11. I am terrified of spiders, bugs and other things that crawl. I also hate reptiles. But I love butterflies and ladybugs!
12. I have taken two cross-country trips on Amtrak with my mom and brother. We went from LA - St. Louis (and back) after 9th grade, and LA - New Orleans (and back) after 10th grade. They were fun trips, but long travel!
13. One of my favorite childhood homeschool memories is the "hot cocoa breaks" we used to take -- we would make hot cocoa, and curl up on the couch where my mom would read books aloud to us. We read so many classics, but the one I remember reading the most is "Where the Red Fern Grows."
14. I have always loved to read. The librarians at the Thousand Oaks library knew us well, and when we went to the library to check out "5 books, no more" we often ended up with a 2-foot stack of books -- and we read most of them!
15. I read every single Boxcar Children book I could get my hands on when I was younger. Same with American Girl books, and Little House on the Prairie.
16. My friends and I would often play Little House on the Prairie. However, even though my name is Laura, I often had to play Mary because my hair is blonde.
17. I went sledding for the first time last winter, and loved it. I also jumped in a pile of leaves for the first time last fall and loved that, too. However, I am not brave enough to try skiing.
18. I love all things "snowman" and have a small snowman collection that I add to as I find cute things. My mini Christmas tree gets decorated with mini blue and white balls and a whole bunch of little snowman ornaments.
19. I got to go to the California State Science Fair twice for my projects on soapmaking. I didn't place, and it really is a miracle I made it that far! But it was SO much fun (and I am not good at science!).
20. The first movie I saw in theaters was 101 Dalmations. I got scared in the middle, so we left half-way through. I have never seen the rest of the movie.
21. I saw Black Beauty in theaters when I was 7 (1994), and that was the last movie I saw in a theater until I saw an IMAX movie on the International Space Station when I was 15. And the next movie I saw in a "real" theater (non-IMAX) was The Incredibles when the Riverstone Regal opened in 2005 and was showing movies for $1. Of course, I've seen lots of movies in theaters since then! :-)
22. I love Pirates of the Caribbean. I wasn't sure if I would when I was going to watch it for the first time, but I loved it, and I really want to go to Disneyland just to ride the ride again. :-)
23. I am graduating from college with my B.S. in Communication Arts in May!!!!!! I can hardly wait.
24. I have several ancestors who are Revolutionary War patriots, and one of them even had a novel written about him after the war. The novel used to be commonly used in history classes at colleges across the country.
25. I love taking pictures and have my camera with me pretty much all the time. Someday I think it would be cool to mix my communication degree with my photography hobby. We'll see!

Don't Worry. . .
. . .I will update again soon. I am actually working on a really fun entry that I am excited about, but haven't had time to finish it. And my laptop is out of commission so I don't have all my pictures, etc. on the computer I'm using at the moment. So, once I get a new laptop and get my pictures/files/life back together, I will be back with a more exciting entry than this one! :-)

As promised, I am back to continue my update. I believe I left off with Christmas in the last post.
Christmas break has been amazing this year -- I have spent lots of time with friends and I haven't had to worry about homework. A couple days after Christmas some friends and I went to see The Tale of Despereaux, based off a children's book of the same name by Kate DiCamillo. I have not read the book, but heard that it is not quite the same as the movie. The movie was cute, but had some strange parts. . .but Despereaux was the CUTEST little mouse, with the biggest ears! :-)
A couple days after seeing The Tale of Despereaux, I went to see
Marley & Me with another friend. Wow. What a good movie. I read the book (by John Grogan) a couple of years ago, and LOVED it. Marley reminded me at times of Cody, and I love a good dog story. And the ending of the book made me cry (I wasn't expecting it to end the way it did). So, when I heard they were making a movie, I knew I had to see it. And wow, was it good. Now, some forewarning: there are parts of the movie that they probably could have left out, and there are some parts that if they had shown any more they would've had to raise the rating. . .but overall it was a good movie that even children could enjoy. And yes, when we first "met" Marley in the movie, I couldn't help but exclaim that I want another puppy. :-) However. . .just to prepare anyone who might decide to watch the movie: I was crying for what seemed like the last half-hour of the movie, but especially in the last 15 minutes or so (seeing affects more than reading, apparently). And I wasn't alone. I don't think there were very many dry eyes in the theater at the end (I could hear lots of sniffling!). And I had to give Cody and Reba extra-big hugs when I came home. But, with that in mind, go see the movie. . .it's #1 at the box office right now for a reason. . .and trust me, everyone, dog-lover or not, will find it to be a cute dog movie. :-) You'll laugh and cry all in one 2-hour movie -- and to me, that is a sign of a good movie!
New Year's Eve was spent at my friend Sarah's house. We had a blast playing Scattergories, Dance Dance Revolution, Uno, and Backseat Drawer. And, of course, at midnight we watched the ball drop on TV and then ran around the neighborhood banging on pots and pans with wooden spoons. We have to start the year off with exercise, right?! :-)
January has been off to a good start. My friend Joy is back in town
for Christmas break, and we just had to do something together! Joy and Mary used to work with me and Devin, and the four of us have done quite a bit together (we all saw Mannheim Steamroller together in 2007, the three of them helped me celebrate my birthday, we have played intense games of Dutch Blitz together, etc.) so it made sense that we'd do something when Joy was in town for Christmas break. We got together and played Scattergories and looked at pictures -- and of course we just had to take a picture. That's me, Mary, Devin & Joy in the picture above.
Last night was lots of fun. I went to my friend Val's house, and, with a group of friends, watched Stardust, which was a strange movie, and I'm not sure I'd recommend watching it. It was a bit weird and, well, interesting. But, after the movie we played Apples to Apples, Bible Trivia, Backseat Drawer and the Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader board game (fun, but WAY easier than the TV game show of the same name!). We also talked, of course, and just enjoyed hanging out together.
There is one week left in Christmas break and I am hopeful that it will be just as fun as the last few weeks have been. After this week the countdown is on for graduation!

An Update
Yes, I know, I haven't updated my blog in awhile. I've been on Christmas break and haven't really felt like coming up with a creative entry. Plus I've been working a lot, and spending every possible moment with friends -- along with trying to keep from getting snowed in with our record amounts of snow outside. But, now I am back with some pictures to show you some of the things I've been up to recently. . .
We had a Christmas party at my work on the Saturday before Christmas. We had a gift exchange, pizza and lots of fun! I ended up with a very sweet gift -- a bag of candy and cookies. I'm trying to space it out and not eat it all at once. :-)
The Christmas party happened to fall on the same night as my co-worker/friend Devin's 21st birthday, so a few of us got our creative brains together to come up with The Ultimate 21st Birthday Present. It consisted of 21 little gifts (we decided we love the Dollar Tree!) -- most of them being inside jokes between all of us at Great Harvest (a red high heel ornament, a Hannah Montana singing pen (gag!), etc.) and some being just plain funny -- like the little container we found with 21 gumballs -- for a 21 gumball salute! :-) It was a fun way to end the Christmas party. :-)
As I think I've mentioned before, I am the Activities Chairperson for the student
council at my college. Our winter activity (which I organized) was a cruise to the North Pole on Lake Cd'A. Each year they take boats across the lake to the "North Pole" which is all decked out in lights, while Santa reads the names of all the kids on board. It's fun and pretty, although it was *freezing* (literally) that night. Our winter activity happened to occur on the same night as the Christmas party at work, so I went from the Christmas party to the North Pole, and I was able to convince Devin to come freeze with me (on his birthday, no less!). We were VERY cold (I have a new appreciation for those on the Titanic), but we were all bundled up and had a blast!
I had to work for a few hours in the morning on Christmas Eve, and after I clocked off I couldn't help but take some pictures of some of the icicles outside. The icicles on this gas can were my favorite -- I thought they looked like a walrus. :-) After I took some pictures of the icicles and snow (none of which turned out as good as I wanted them to), work had pretty much slowed down, so Devin was also able to clock off, and we went sledding (I didn't want to go by myself -- it's no fun that way!) and then we drove out by the lake to look at the Bald Eagles that are here this time of year. The Bald Eagles are SO impressive, let me tell you! I only saw about 3 or 4, but wow! They look so majestic when they fly!!!!!
Christmas came and went rather quickly. My mom and brother got home
from California just a couple days before Christmas, so we didn't have much excitement leading up to the big day, but it was nice just the same. We spent the day at home, doing nothing too exciting. However, it was the whitest Christmas I can imagine (as in, feet of snow on the ground and more falling!) which was really nice.
. . .There has been more going on, but this entry is getting rather long, and I need to get ready to go -- I'm heading to a friend's house to watch a movie -- so I will continue this update later.

Let it Snow! Let it Snow!! Let it Snow!!!
Hi! Laura here. I am here to take you on a little tour of our yard in North Idaho in the winter. You see, yesterday morning I woke up to find snow on the ground -- nothing too bad, but it didn't look like it was letting up any time soon. Last night I left work and my car, after being parked in one place for about 9 hours, had about 10-inches (or more!) of snow on it. Needless to say, it took me awhile to clean it off! The snow continued to fall, but I wasn't sure how bad it would be.
This morning I was awakened by my dad who informed me that my chances of getting to work this morning were slim. I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked outside to see an additional foot or more of snow in our yard. And it hasn't stopped since. Schools (even the colleges!) are closed and "they" (law enforcement people, TV broadcasters, etc.) are saying to stay home if you don't have somewhere you HAVE to be. So, after talking to my boss, I am taking a snow day today.
Granted, I love snow days. . .but today I am slightly bored. You see, I don't have any homework to do, and I would love to be outside playing, but I can't seem to find my snow pants! Plus, I wasn't expecting to have nothing to do today. Too bad we aren't getting this major white-ness on Christmas. Oh well, we're going to have a White Christmas -- this stuff isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

This was taken early this morning -- a picture of our deck.
There was almost 22 inches of snow this morning. I haven't measured since, but I know there is now a lot more.
The beehives were buried in snow, and my dad had to dig some space around them so that the bees wouldn't suffocate. I think it looks like the hives are wearing little hats. :-)
